The Upper Room Cafe is our church-run community café. We’re usually open six days a week but our current opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday 10am-2pm. We’ve just reopen and have put lots of measures in place to make the café Covid-secure including a one-way system in and out of the café, table service, face shields for our front of house café team, tables spaced 2 metres apart, and increased handwashing and cleaning. Please don’t come to the café if you have any Covid-19 symptoms, have recently tested positive, or if anyone in your household has symptoms. Please sanitise your hands on entrance to the building and bring contactless card payment if you can. In line with current Government guidelines we record names of and contact numbers for everyone using the café for Track & Trace purposes.
The café is run by a handful of paid staff and a large team of amazing volunteers. The cafe is a welcoming and relaxing space to meet with friends and family or to come on your own. We serve light lunches including paninis, jacket potatoes, soups, and sandwiches as well as a full range of loose leaf teas, coffees, cakes, and snacks. Our soups, cakes, and scones are made in our cafe kitchen. We have a Food Hygiene Rating of 5 which was most recently awarded in February 2020.
The cafe is here to be a blessing to you. So as well as serving you good food we also want the cafe to be good for your soul – a place where you can come and take a break from your day, meet with friends, or find a quiet corner to sit and read. Stay as long as you like. We offer free refills on tea and filter coffee if you’ve got time to stay for another cup. We are a bridge between the church and local community, a warm welcome and friendly people to chat to.
We have free wifi and air conditioning to keep you cool in the summer. There is a collection point for Chelwood Food Bank, please feel free to leave any donations. There is also lift access, disabled toilets and nappy changing facilities. Please do get in touch with us if you have any feedback or suggestions as we’d like to be continually improving the cafe and keep it a place that our customers enjoy.
We pray that you would enjoy the cafe and know something of God’s peace and presence as you enjoy the food and space.
We are based next to the rear entrance of Tesco Express off Massie Street carpark. Find us on the first floor. We have a lift for disabled access. Use SK8 1BN to find the carpark. (Map).
We regularly have new volunteers joining our team so please feel free to get in touch if you think this is something you or someone you know may be interested in. Our volunteers do shifts of between 2-4 hours once a week or month. We also have adhoc volunteers who help to fill in the gaps on the rota as and when they can. There are lots of jobs to do in the cafe from serving customers and prepping food to keeping the dishwasher going and cleaning the kitchen. So whether you are a people person who wants to be out front serving or someone who would rather stay behind the scenes there is a place for you. We have volunteers of all ages and walks of life. Some are retired, some come to help out their day off, others come to get cafe experience or because the routine and teamwork are a benefit to them. We are also a volunteer placement for those doing Duke of Edinburgh awards. The minimum age to volunteer with us is 14 and there is no maximum age! All our staff are DBS checked for working with young people and complete regular Safeguarding training. Please download our Volunteer Application Form or get in touch and we’ll post one out to you.
